Q2 sees spike in engagement for mobile Rich Media Ads Tue, 02 Oct 2012 16:58:06 +0000 It appears Mobile is just about ready for primetime. An article from Marketingcharts, one of my favorite online sources of data of this type reports" rich media ads saw an average engagement rate of 12.8% in Q2 2012, according to a September 2012 report from Celtra that analyzed 60 campaigns across 4 industry verticals. Engagement rates were by far the highest in the financial vertical (21.5%), although both retail (14.3%) and entertainment (12.1%) also saw double-digit engagement rates, with auto (9.9%) close behind.

Mobile payments to pass $171B in 2012 and $617B by 2016 Wed, 30 May 2012 01:57:52 +0000 Research out today from Gartner says that this year will see more than $171.5 billion in mobile payment transactions. That's a whopping 60% increase on 2011′s $105.9 billion. This means that 212.2 million people (up 32% from 160.5 million in 2011) are using some form of mobile payment service.

And while the technology is out there to offer near-field-communication between smartphones and POS systems, it is Web transactions and SMS services that are making up the bulk of these digital transactions.

I can't imagine what the numbers will look like in the mobile payment world when devices like the iPhone and more Android smartphones start adopting the NFC-chips needed to turn your phone into a wallet.

Gartner sees digital mobile transactions reaching $617 billion by 2016 — but these factors in a slight slowing-down in growth to 42%.

In-App purchases made by 40% of free App users NPD study finds Tue, 24 Apr 2012 00:45:05 +0000 App developers looking to make some cash might want to ditch paid titles for free offerings that include in-app purchases, according to a new study.

After downloading an upgradable freemium game in a mobile app store, 40 percent of consumers decided to make an in-game purchase, according to research firm NPD. Most, however, were men. The analysts found that while women are more likely to have played freemium games, they're "among the least likely to pay for an upgrade."

Mobile shopping study shows iPad accounts for vast majority of mobile revenue at 89% Thu, 12 Apr 2012 19:35:48 +0000 The iPad accounts for nearly two-thirds of all mobile shopping sessions, and an impressive 89% of all mobile shopping revenue, says RichRelevance in April 2012 study results. With mobile’s share of total retail climbing to 4.6% in March 2012 (from 1.9% in April 2011), this means that the iPad now account for more than 4% of total retail revenue. Meanwhile, other iOS devices make up 4% of the mobile revenue share, with other mobiles holding the remaining 7%. The study found that all mobiles combined now account for 9% of total online shopping sessions.

Do senior managers analyse ROI of new digital media? Thu, 15 Mar 2012 17:05:32 +0000 A new article suggests senior marketers are not looking closely enough at metrics of the new digital marketing opportunities in terms of ROI.

A new article in suggests the following:

"Only 14% of senior marketers whose companies use social network marketing say they are tying their efforts to financial metrics such as market share, revenue, profits, or lifetime customer value, while only 17% of those whose companies are using mobile advertising say they are doing so, according to [download page] a survey released in March 2012 by Columbia University’s Center on Global Brand Leadership and the New York American Marketing Association (NYAMA). This compares to 41% whose companies measure the financial impact of their email marketing, and 47% whose companies do so for their traditional direct mail marketing...."
